Advent Calendar 2025 - Day 3

Day 3 Hint Game: Two Truths & a Lie

  1. I taste like coffee and dried fruit.

  2. I’m stronger than a typical stout.

  3. I’m smooth, dark, and easy to sip.

Which one’s the lie?

If you guessed that “I’m stronger than a typical stout” was the lie… you nailed it.

Today’s beer is Obsidian, our export stout — smooth, dark, and packed with notes of coffee beans, dried fruit, and sweet raisins, but without the heavy kick you might expect.

So, what is an export stout?

Export stouts originated as a slightly more robust version of traditional stouts, built to travel across long sea journeys back in the day. They needed a bit more body and character to hold up over time — but that didn’t always mean more alcohol. Instead, export stouts tend to land in this beautiful middle ground: richer than your standard stout, but not as boozy or intense as an imperial stout.

How is Obsidian different from a regular stout?

A classic stout is usually smooth, roasty, and moderate in strength. Export stouts turn that dial just a touch:

More depth in flavour without overwhelming heaviness

A little more complexity, often leaning into dried fruit, cocoa, and richer coffee notes

Still very drinkable, offering a layered experience without the high ABV punch

Enjoy unveiling today’s beer 🍻
